NEW WILMINGTON, PA. — The Hiram College cross country teams competed in its second meet of the season in as many days at the Westminster College Invitational this afternoon (Saturday, Aug. 30) in New Wilmington, Pa. The Terrier men placed fourth of 11 teams while the women finished 11th of 13 teams. [Men’s Results] [Women’s Results]
The Hiram men tallied 126 points to place fourth while Grove City (Pa.) College won the overall men’s event with a team score of 21 points. Penn State-Behrend was second with 88 points and Gannon (Pa.) University rounded out the top three with 111 points.
Individually for the men, junior William Brown (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier Central) recorded the top time for the team, and finished 14th overall, with a mark of 29:02. Freshman Zachary Eshelmann (Carona, Ariz./Cienega)cross the finish line second for Hiram completing the course in a tima of 29:26 and placed 19th overall. Fellow freshman Joseph Hengoed (Seven Hills/Normandy) recorded the third best time of 29:51 while junior Kent Vasko (Newbury) was fourth to complete the course for Hiram recording a time of 30:32. Senior Josh Kashmer (South Dayton, N.Y./Pine Valley) rounded out the top-five competitors for the Terriers posting a time of 30:58. Also competing for Hiram was sophomore Nicholas Michalenko (Moon Twp., Pa./Our Lady of Sacred Heart) and freshman Donald Daley (Chagrin Falls/University School) who finished the event with times of 32:09 and 38:01.
The Hiram women ended the day with 320 points to finish in 11th place. Grove City won the event to sweep both the men’s and women’s titles with 49 points. Gannon was second at 69 points and Franciscan University was third with 82 points.
Individually, the Hiram women were led for the second straight day by freshman Zipporah Kirubi (Elyria) who placed 46th overall with a time of 27:52. Sophomore Meghen Broman (Akron/Ellet) posted the second best time for the Terriers with a mark of 30:05. Junior Katherine Eppley (Stow) was third recording a time of 32:45 while sophomore Rachel Bisker (Ostrander/Milford Center Fairbanks) completed the 5k course in a time of 34:42 to place fourth on the team. Completing the top five performances for the Terriers was Bristena Marinescu with an overall time of 35:29. Also competing for Hiram was junior Kim Hilinski (Bainbridge Twp./Kenston) who had a time of 39:40, sophomore Leah Shema (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with a time of 41:55, sophomore Lindsay Kuhn (Canfield) had a time of 42:53 and sophomore Holly Finzel (Burton/Berkshire) ran a 27:28 and sophomore Kelly Blon (Jefferson/Jefferson Area) completed the course in a time of 45:53.
The Hiram cross country teams return to action on Friday (Sept. 6) at the Greater Cleveland Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
