Five Hiram students placed in the Echo Student Literary Competition. Each year, students currently enrolled at Bethany College, Heidelberg University, Hiram College Marietta College, University of Mount Union, and Muskingum University are encouraged to participate and be judged in three categories: poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction.

Poetry

  • First place:  Kerry Hamilton, Hiram College, for “Women Take Me to Water,” “A Girl’s Bathroom,” “Musings On A Girl”
  • Second place: Makayla Thomas, Hiram College, for “Obituary Of Shirley Kado,” “Holding My Anxiety,” “No Justice No Peace”
  • Third place:  Ashton Knappenberger, University of Mount Union, for “5:32 PM”

Fiction

  • First place:  Nazara Taylor, Muskingum University, for “Degaje Pa Peche”
  • Second place:  Adam Ellis, Hiram College, for “Overcast”
  • Third place: Chloe Laszlo, University of Mount Union, for “Primrose”

Creative Nonfiction

  • First place:  Zachary Dillon, Heidelberg University, for “Bear”
  • Second place:  Rebecca Cotterman, Hiram College, for “Boogie Boarding”
  • Third place:  Lorna Metzger, Hiram College, for “Measuring the Distance That The Apple Fell From The Tree With Lots of Scrutiny”

All winning and honorable mention entries will be published in the Echo Literary Anthology.
