A recent article by USA Today discussed the potential negative impacts of using technology during regular exercise. Michael Rebold, Ph.D., department chair, program director, and assistant professor of integrative exercise science at Hiram College is quoted in the article, discussing how social media and texting can be a distraction during a workout. Rebold says that this accommodation of conversation takes the workout into a low-intensity exercise, or the idea that an individual is “basically working out for nothing.”
A study by Rebold and others from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania found that talking on the phone or texting decreases workout intensity and also affects balance. Read more from the study.
