Sophomore JoLyn Grover (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) scored four goals to help lead the Hiram College women’s lacrosse team to an 8-6 victory against Hilbert (N.Y.) College in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field in the home opener.

Hiram (1-1) scored the first goal of the game at the 28:03 minute mark when sophomore Hannah Schaefer (Kent/Roosevelt) scored her first of three scores on the day to give the Terriers the early 1-0 lead.  Hilbert (0-1) came back to even the game at 1-1 with 25:40 left in the opening period, but the Terriers regained the lead almost eight-and-a-half minutes later with a goal by Grover making the score 2-1 with 17:20 left before halftime.  The Hawks then recorded back-to-back scores to take a 3-2 advantage.  Hiram answered with back-to-back goals of its own from Schaefer on a free-position shot and an unassisted goal by Grover to make it a 4-3 game at the intermission.

In the second half, Hiram gained some breathing room with a goal by Schaefer at the 26:38 mark and a goal by junior Devonique Henderson (Streetsboro) with 25:23 to play to increase the margin to 6-3.  Hilbert then rallied scoring three unanswered goals to even the game at 6-6 with the last score coming at the 8:38 mark.  Just under three minutes later, Grover tallied the go-ahead score (unassisted) to give Hiram the 7-6 lead.  The Terriers held off any final offensive attacks by the Hawks in the final minutes and Grover found the back of the net a final time with a second to go in the game as Hiram went on to claim the 8-6 final.

In net for Hiram, sophomore Rebecca Greenhouse (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) played all 60 minutes and got the win to improve to 1-1 overall for the season.  She allowed six goals and had nine saves.

Hiram is scheduled to host the University of Mount Union next Friday, Mar. 14 in a non-conference matchup at Henry Field.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
