NORTH CANTON, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Walsh University Invitational today (Saturday, Sept. 10) in North Canton. The Terrier men placed fourth overall and the women were fifth.
The men ended the event with 116 points to place fourth overall of five teams. John Carroll University won the event with 20 points, followed by the University of Mount Union with 36 points. Rounding out the top three teams was host school Walsh University at 83 points.
Individually, senior Joe Hengoed (Seven Hills/Normandy) posted the top overall time for the men at 27:28 and placed 14th overall out of 68 total runners. Junior Bryan Nemire (Berlin Heights/Edison) was second with a mark of 28:48. Junior Brendon Curtin (Burton/Berkshire) crossed the finish line third for Hiram with a time of 30:03 and senior Don Daley (Chagrin Falls/University School) was fourth at 32:08. Also competing for Hiram was junior Dennis Kirimi (Nayiobi, Kenya) who completed the 8k course in a time of 32:42. Joining Kirimi were sophomore Anthony Franklin (Newbury) who posted a mark of 39:12 and freshman Bryan Goldstein (Lyndhurst/Brush) and Jabez Patterson (Chicago, Ill./Noble Street Charter School) recorded times of 45:59 and 48:23 respectively.
The Terrier women completed the event with a team total of 149 points to place fifth overall of five teams. Mount Union won the overall event with a team total 27 points. John Carroll was second with 33 and Walsh rounded out the top three with 77 points.
Senior Alexandra Oleszko (Seattle, Wash.) had the overall fastest individual time for Hiram at 24:26 and placed 63rd overall of 78 runners. Sophomore Clarissa Claflin (Mayfield/Mayfield Heights) was second with a mark of 25:36 and freshman Patricia Bohls (Macedonia) was third with a time of 26:01. Junior Natalie Richardson (McConnelsville/Morgan) was the fourth Hiram runner to cross the finish line and posted a mark of 27:01 and was followed by senior Christine Bieniosek (Litchfield) who ran a time of 29:51. Also competing for Hiram was junior Elizabeth Haase (Akron/Firestone) with a time of 30:01. Freshman Ellen Rochford (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) completed the 5k course in a time of 30:46 and freshman Sarah Dutton (Columbia, Md.) rounded out the Hiram competitors with a mark of 32:01.
The Hiram cross country teams will continue their 2011 schedule next Saturday (Sept. 17) when they travel to Erie, Pa. for the Penn State-Behrend Invitational. The first race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
