YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO — The Hiram College cross country teams competed at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships today (Saturday, Oct. 29) hosted by Wittenberg University at the John Bryan State Park in Yellow Springs. The Hiram men totaled 289 team points to place 10th of 10 teams. Wabash (Ind.) College captured the NCAC team title with 52 points and was followed by Allegheny (Pa.) College in second place with 65 points. Ohio Wesleyan University rounded out the top three teams with 67 points.
Individually for Hiram, senior Joe Hengoed (Seven Hills/Normandy) had the fastest overall individual time at 26:50.0 and placed 25th overall of 116 runners. Junior Bryan Nemire (Berlin Heights/Edison) was second with a mark of 29:14.2 and was followed by fellow junior Brendan Curtin (Burton/Berkshire) in third in a time of 29:42.1. Sophomore Forrest Reed (Seven Hills/Normandy) recorded the fourth fastest time for the Terriers at 29:58.2 and junior Dennis Kirimi (Nayiobi, Kenya) was fifth on the team with a time of 30:49.7. Rounding out the men’s scoring times was senior Don Daley (Chagrin Falls/University School) who completed the course in a time of 32;46.5 and sophomore Anthony Franklin (Newbury) with a time of 33:24.7. Also competing for the men was sophomore Manpreet Grewel (Parma/Normandy) and freshman Jabez Patterson (Chicago, Ill./Noble Street Charter School) who posted marks of 33:33.5 and 43:12.6 respectively.
The women finished the event with a team-total 290 points to place ninth of nine teams. Oberlin College finished first in the overall team standings to win the championship with 32 points. Ohio Wesleyan University was second with 103 points and DePauw (Ind.) University was third with 111 points.
The women were led by sophomore Laila Almassri (Parma/Normandy) who posted the top overall time for the Terriers of 27:23.3 and placed 78th overall of 98 runners. Junior Megan Orosz (Mentor/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) was second at 29:45.6 and was followed by fellow junior Alexandra Oleszko (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) in third with a mark of 30:43.6. Junior Natalie Richardson (McConnelsville/Morgan) crossed the finish line in a time of 30:47.5 to finish fourth on the team. Junior Amy Morton (Tacoma, Wash./St. Anthony Village, Minn.) posted a time of 32:15.1 and senior Christine Bieniosek (Litchfield) rounded out the scoring times for the women with a time of 32:39.6. Other Hiram competitors included freshman Patricia Bohls (Macedonia) who had a time of 33:07.5. Freshman Ellen Rochford (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) completed the course in a time of 33:34.4 and junior Elizabeth Haase (Akron/Firestone) finished the race in a time of 33:50.9. Freshman Sarah Dutton (Columbia, Md./Long Beach) posted the final time for Hiram of 37:35.5.
The cross country teams will next compete at the NCAA Division III Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 12 hosted by Oberlin College in Oberlin. The first race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
