The Hiram College baseball team was swept by Oberlin College, 14-7 and 8-4, this afternoon (Saturday, Mar. 20) in the North Coast Athletic Conference and home opener at Robert O. Fishel Field.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the losses, the Terriers drop to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC.  The Yeomen improve to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC.

In game one, Oberlin took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning.  Hiram answered with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning that was highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by senior All-NCAC infielder Kyle Kovach (Garfield Heights) and freshman outfielder Ian Sewolich (Cleveland/St. Ignatius).  The Yeomen cut the lead to a run in the third, before the Terriers added three more scores in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 7-3.  Oberlin then tallied 11 unanswered runs, including a five-run sixth, en route to the 14-7 come-from-behind win.

At the plate, Hiram was led by Kovach who finished two-of-four with two RBI.  Six other Terriers recorded a base hit in the loss.

On the mound, junior Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley) got the start and pitched five innings giving up six runs on 10 hits in the no decision.  Sophomore Chris Wilson (Geneva) came on to pitch a third of an inning of relief allowing three runs and was given the loss, dropping him to 0-1 for the season.  Freshman Mike LaLonde (Willowick/South) pitched two-thirds of an inning giving up two runs on three hits and junior Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) pitched the final inning allowing three runs on two hits.

In the nightcap, the Yeomen scored a run in the top of the second to take the early 1-0 lead.  Hiram evened the score thanks to a RBI groundout by junior infielder Andy Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local) in the bottom of the inning.  Oberlin regained control and scored runs in the next four innings with three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.  Hiram tallied a run in fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh to round out the scoring, but would fall short in game two, 8-4.

Hiram outhit Oberlin, 12-11, and was led by sophomore Lance Townsend (Garrettsville) who went three-of-four with two RBI.  Kovach, junior Cody Fincham (Windham) and junior Doug Adkins (Frazeysburg/Riverview) each recorded a pair of hits.

Sophomore pitcher John Colla (Austintown/Ursuline) started the game and went five innings, but suffered his second loss of the season, making him 0-2 overall.  In five innings, he allowed seven runs on nine hits.  Junior Eric Schaffer (Kent/Roosevelt) pitched two innings of relief, giving up a run and struck out two batters.

Hiram is scheduled to host Oberlin College again tomorrow (Sunday, Mar. 21) in another NCAC doubleheader at Fishel Field.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
