STRUTHERS, OHIO — The Hiram College baseball team lost both games in a non-conference doubleheader against Case, 5-1 and 11-7, on Wednesday (Apr. 6) at Cene Park in Struthers. [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]
With the losses, the Terriers fall to 8-12 overall and the Spartans improve to 21-10 overall for the season.
In game one, both teams tallied a run in the first inning with Hiram’s score the result of a RBI single by junior Steve Dunn (Westlake) with runners on first and second. It would be the Spartans who would score the rest of runs and took the lead in the top of the third inning crossing the plate twice to make the score 3-1. Case went on to add runs in the fourth and in the seventh to go on to the 5-1 victory.
Junior Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes) led the Terrier hitters finishing two-of-three overall. Dunn was one of three other Terriers to record a base hit and went one-of-three with the RBI.
On the mound, senior Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley) pitched all seven innings, but was given the loss and drops him to 1-4 overall for the season. He allowed five runs on 11 hits and struck out one batter.
In the nightcap, Case looked to run away with the game scoring three runs in the top of the first, six in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to lead 11-0. But Hiram would rally with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a series of RBI hits and would record three more runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 11-7. Hiram held Case scoreless in the top of the seventh and would have a final chance to continue the rally. But three straight outs sealed the game for the Spartans and Case hung on for the 11-7 win.
The Terriers recorded nine hits in the second game and was led by freshman George Blake (Parma) who finished the game three-of-four and scored a pair of runs. Fellow freshman Tim Calhoun (Canfield) also recorded a multi-hit game going two-of-three with two runs scored and a RBI. Four other Hiram players each recorded a base hit despite the loss.
Junior John Colla (Austintown/Ursuline) got the start on the mound and pitched three-and-a-third innings giving up eight runs on eight hits while tallying five strikeouts. Colla would also suffer the loss and is now 0-2 overall. Senior Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) came on to pitch an inning and two-thirds allowing three runs on three hits. Senior Eric Schaffer (Kent/Roosevelt) pitched the final two innings allowing just a hit and struck out two batters.
Hiram is scheduled to host Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Apr. 9 in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader and home opener at Robert O. Fishel Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
