LAKELAND, FLA. — The Hiram College baseball team rebounded from a pair of losses yesterday with a 14-4 victory against Lesley (Mass.) University today (Tuesday, Mar. 8) in a single game at Lake Myrtle Park in Lakeland, Fla. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers are now 3-2 overall for the season.
Hiram scored runs in every inning and quickly took control scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning and then adding three more runs in the second that included a pair of RBI walks with bases loaded by senior Doug Adkins (Frazeysburg/Riverview) and junior Steve Dunn (Westlake) to give the Terriers a 4-0 lead. Hiram scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth innings to blow the game open and lead 9-0. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Terriers scored a pair of runs with a two-RBI double by freshman Tim Calhoun (Canfield) in the fifth and a two-run homerun by junior Lance Townsend (Garrettsville) in the sixth, his first of the season. Lesley got on the board in the top of the sixth with four runs, but still trailed, 13-4, after six frames. Hiram scored its final run in the seventh with a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 14-4 and envoked a 10-run mercy rule to claim the victory.
The Hiram offense posted an impressive day with 11 total hits. Junior Torrey Stimson (Hudson/Walled Lake (Mich.)) led the way going a perfect four-of-four at the plate with two runs scored and a RBI. Calhoun also finshed the day with multiple hits going two-of-three overall with a run scored and four RBI. Five other Terriers each recorded a base hit in the win.
Freshman pitcher Drew Skelley (Lowellville) had an equally impressive day on the mound in his first collegiate start. He pitched six innings, including five scoreless innings, allowing four runs and struck out nine batters. Senior Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) pitched the final inning allowing no runs or hits and tallied one strikeout.
Hiram will be off tomorrow, but will resume the schedule on Thursday, Mar. 10 with a doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer (N.H.) College in Winter Haven, Fla. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
