CLEVELAND, OHIO — The Hiram College baseball team was picked to finish ninth in the annual North Coast Athletic Conference preseason poll that was released today (Thursday, Feb. 24). [NCAC Preaseason Poll]
Hiram totaled 10 points to place ninth of nine schools. Defending NCAC Champion The College of Wooster was again selected as the favorite, finishing with 78 points and seven of nine first-place votes. Wabash (Ind.) College was picked second and Allegheny (Pa.) College was tabbed third in addition to receiving one first-place vote. Ohio Wesleyan University was the other first-place recepient and was predicted to finish fifth overall.
This season, Hiram returns 12 letterwinners, including six position starters and three starting pitchers. The Terriers will be led by five seniors who include All-NCAC outfielder Doug Adkins (Frazeysburg/ Riverview), pitcher Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley), infielder Andy Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local), pitcher Eric Schaffer (Kent Rossevelt) and pitcher Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Brashear). Hiram opens the 2011 season on Sunday, Mar. 6 against Juniata (Pa.) College in a doubleheader in Winter Haven, Fla. The first game is scheduled to begin a 11 a.m.
