AMHERST, NEW YORK  —  The Hiram College baseball team took one of two games from D’Youville College today (Thursday, Apr. 15) in a non-conference doubleheader in Amherst, N.Y.  The Terriers won the first game, 18-4, but fell in game two, 5-4.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

Following today’s doubleheader, Hiram is now 5-22 overall, while the Spartans are 5-17 overall for the season.

In game one, Hiram took control early scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and added four more runs in the second, highlighted by a pair of two-RBI doubles by senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference catcher Justin Street (Warren/Howland) and sophomore infielder Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes), giving the Terriers a 6-0 advantage.  D’Youville cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth, but an 11-run fifth by Hiram put the game out of reach and increased the lead to 17-2.  The Spartans went on to add runs the fifth and seventh innings, while the Terriers crossed the plate once in the sixth for the 18-4 victory.

Hiram totaled 16 hits in the game and was led offensively by Miller who finished three-of-five with two runs scored and four RBI.  Five other Terriers tallied a pair of hits in the win.

On the mound, junior Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley) picked up his third win of the season to improve to 3-3 overall.  He pitched four innings allwoing two runs on three hits, while striking out four batters.  Junior Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) came on to pitch three innings of relief giving up two runs on four hits and had two strikeouts.

In the second game, Hiram struck early scoring three runs in the first that included a two-RBI double by Street, and added another run in the second to lead 4-0.  D’Youville cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the third and then tied the game at 4-4 with two more runs in the sixth.  The game remained tied heading into the bottom of the seventh until a Spartan single allowed a run to score for the 5-4 win.

Despite the loss, Hiram won the battle at the plate outhitting D’Youville, 8-6.  Individually, the Terriers were led by junior infielder Cody Fincham (Windham) who had three hits in four attempts, including scoring a run and recording a RBI.

Freshman pitcher Mike LaLonde (Willowick/South) got the start in game two and pitched five innings allowing three runs on three hits and struck out five batters.  Junior Chris Wilson (Geneva) recorded an inning of relief, but would be credited with the loss, after giving up two runs on two hits and had one strikeout.  Junior Eric Schaffer (Kent/Roosevelt) came on to pitch a third of an inning and allowed one hit.

Hiram is scheduled to host the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg on Saturday (Apr. 17) in a non-conference doubleheader at Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
