GATES MILLS, OHIO — The Hiram College baseball team was defeated by Notre Dame College, 14-6, today (Sunday, Mar. 14) in a non-conference single nine-inning game at Hawken Field in Gates Mills. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers are now 3-7 overall, while the Falcons improve to 10-4 overall for the season.
Hiram struck first with a run in the top of the first inning on a double by sophomore Steve Dunn (Westlake) that was followed by a defensive error that allowed senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference catcher Justin Street (Warren/Howland) to score from first base. Notre Dame then scored six unanswered runs to take the lead, crossing the plate twice in the bottom of the first, three in the third and one in the fourth. The Terriers cut into the Falcon lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Notre Dame answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning and added two more runs in the sixth to lead 14-3. Hiram recorded its final three runs of the game in the eighth on a series of errors by the Falcon defense as Notre Dame went on to win by the final of 14-6.
Hiram was led at the plate by Dunn who finished three-of-four with a RBI. Three other Terriers each recorded a hit.
On the mound, five players saw action with junior Andy Marsh (Orwell/Grand Valley) getting the start and pitched three innings allowing four runs on seven hits and struck out one batter. He was also given the loss and is now 1-1 for the season.
Hiram is scheduled to host Thiel (Pa.) College on Tuesday (Mar. 16) in a non-conference nine inning game and the home opener at the Robert O. Fishel Field. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
