The Hiram College baseball team was defeated by Lake Erie College, 19-4, today (Thursday, Apr. 24) in a non-conference and single nine-inning game at the Robert O. Fishel Field. [Game Stats]
Lake Erie (13-22) tallied three runs in the first with a two-run homerun and a solo homerun and led, 9-0, after four innings. Hiram (8-18) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with three runs highlighted by a RBI double by junior outfielder Joe Trela (Lakewood) and a RBI single by freshman infielder Cody Fincham (Windham) making the score 9-3. The Storm extended their lead with six runs in the seventh and four in the ninth for a 19-3 advantage. The Terriers scored their final run of the game in the ninth on a RBI single off the bat of junior All-NCAC designated hitter Craig Dobos (Warren/Howland) as Hiram fell 19-4.
Fincham, Dobos and sophomore infielder Kyle Kovach (Garfield Heights) each recorded two hits in the game to lead the Hiram hitters. Fincham and Kovach each finished two-of-four and Fincham added two runs scored and a RBI. Dobos went two-of-five overall and drove in a run.
On the mound, six Hiram pitchers saw action. Junior Josh Kashmer (South Dayton, N.Y./Pine Valley) got the start, but suffered his second loss of the season and is now 0-2 overall. In two and two-thirds innings, Kashmer allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out two batters.
Hiram will look to get back on track on Saturday (Apr. 26) when it hosts Allegheny (Pa.) College in a rescheduled North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Fishel Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
