
Junior Tim Calhoun (Canfield) went a combined four-of-seven with a run scored and seven RBI in doubleheader against D’Youville (N.Y.).
The Hiram College baseball team came away with a pair of wins against D’Youville (N.Y.) College in a non-conference doubleheader at Robert O. Fishel Field on senior day.
In the first game, Hiram (12-16) took a sizeable lead right from the start scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning on a series of RBI base hits, including a two-RBI double by senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference pitcher/outfielder Travis Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local). The Terriers added two more runs in the third on RBI singles by junior Jim Jaksa(Chesterland/West Geauga) and sophomore Mark Leone (Boardman). D’Youville (5-16) scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Hiram answered with four more runs in the bottom half of the frame highlighted by a three-RBI double by junior Tim Calhoun (Canfield) with bases loaded to make the score 14-1. The Spartans crossed the plate two more times in the sixth, but Hiram struck for five more runs in its half of the inning to go on to the 19-3 final.
Offensively, Hiram had 19 hits in the game with six players recording multiple hits. Richey finished the game a perfect two-of-two with four runs scored and two RBI. Jaksa finished one-of-two to go along with a two runs scored and a RBI, while Leone went two-of-five overall with a run scored and three RBI. Calhoun posted a one-for-three effort with four RBI.
On the mound, sophomore Nate Weiss (Warren, Mich./University Liggett) started the game and pitched five innings to record the win and improve to 4-4 overall for the season. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out four batters. Fellow sophomore Tanner Gilchrist (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) came on to pitch two innings of relief giving up two runs on two hits and had two strikeouts.
In game two, Hiram again took the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-RBI single by Calhoun. D’Youville got one of the runs back in the top of the second to cut the lead in half, 2-1. But Hiram extended its lead with a five-run third inning and included a two-RBI double by senior Lee Cancilla (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) making the score 7-1. Hiram scored its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-RBI double by Jaksa as the Terriers would go on to win by the final of 9-1.
Hiram posted 11 hits in the game led by Calhoun who went three-of-four with a run scored and three RBI. Cancilla finished two-of-four with two RBI and Jaksa went two-of-three with two runs scored and two RBI.
Hiram will host Oberlin College in a NCAC doubleheader on Tuesday (Apr. 23) at Fishel Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
