Historian and food writer Paul Freedman will present the lecture Poverty and Prestige: Hunger and Fine Dining in the Middle Ages, at noon on March 28, 2013 in the library’s Pritchard Room.
Freedman is a professor of history at Yale University. He teaches and publishes on Spain in the Middle Ages, as well as on peasants and the church. His longstanding interest in the history of food and cuisine has led him to edit Food: The History of Taste, an illustrated collection of essays about food from prehistoric to contemporary times, which won a cookbook award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals.
Freedman’s other works include his book Out of the East: Spices and the Medieval Imagination, published in 2008 by Yale University Press, which discusses the demand for spices in medieval Europe. In addition, he wrote Images of the Medieval Peasant (1999), which won the Haskins Medal of the Medieval Academy of America and the Gründler Prize of the International Medieval Congress.
