Christopher Ryan, associate professor and art department chair, will exhibit artwork in a solo show at Mount Union University in Alliance. The exhibition, titled “Surfaces & Spaces,” will feature paintings from the artist’s ongoing “Pavimenti” (floors) series, as well as a selection of plein air landscape pieces from Italy and Ohio.

His “Pavimenti” series addresses the convergence of the material culture of the past and the residue of contemporary life.

“One theme addressed in many of these pieces is the dichotomy between the pleasures and preoccupations of everyday life set against the backdrop of war, conflict, and troubling world events,” Ryan writes in his artist statement. “In all of these works, the floor plane itself has serves as a metaphor for the surroundings that we navigate daily, but often treat with ambivalence, disregard, or disrespect.”

The landscape series depicts landscapes from Northeast Ohio and Tuscany and Umbria, Italy, drawing influences from the bold contrasts of the Italian Macchiaioli painters of 19th Century Italy, .

The show will run from Feb. 6 through Mar. 6, 2013, in Mount Union’s Crandall Art Gallery, located in the William H. Eells Art Center. A public reception and artist talk will take place Friday, Feb. 15 from 4-6 p.m.
