The 2024 Annual Juried Student Art Show recently debuted in the Hiram College Gelbke Art Gallery featuring the work of students from diverse art disciplines, including painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, and video.  

In judging, the juror looked for work that demonstrated a personal expression or vision, technical skill, and an ability to create a cohesive composition. Winners were selected and announced during a recent awards ceremony in the gallery.  

The juror this year was artist and educator Jessica Pinsky, M.F.A. Awards for the show included over $1,000 in cash prizes in several categories including work by a first- or second-year student.  

This year’s 2024 award winners were:  

Alex and Tamara Brady Pendleton Best in Show Award [$250]: Jimmy Thomas for Body of artwork (painting, sculpture) 

Paul A. Rochford Award for Excellence [$150]: Wyatt Lupton for Camping with Queers (video) 

Ellen Jagow Award for Painting [$150]: Wyatt Lupton for Devil’s Deal (oil painting) 

Abigail Flint Award for Photography [$150]: Isabella Galecki for digital photograph 

Award for Design [$150]: Andrea Goodman for Pursued by Inspiration (digital drawing) 

Award for Outstanding Work by Freshman or Sophomore [$150]: Kevin Byrne for Sincere Chaos (collage)  

Juror’s Mention [$50]: Bethany Smith for Dear Ophelia… (painting), Kacey Whistler for Hiram College (ceramic tile), and Reece Zeigler for Infinity & (Graphic illustration) 

Submitted work was to be created during the students’ time at the College. The exhibition was also an educational opportunity for students, as they learned how to prepare work for presentation and how to price artwork. Furthermore, student gallery assistants were responsible for designing the show’s layout and installing the exhibition.
