Hiram Health

For decades, Hiram has been known as one of the best Ohio colleges for preparing students for medical school. But a relatively new program called Hiram Health does much more than that. Hiram Health is the College’s way of bundling, delivering, and integrating a variety of academic and co-curricular health programs to offer students a number of health-related majors; graduate, medical, and dental school pathways, and co-curricular activities.

Premier Undergraduate Education for Health Care Professionals

Our commitment begins with educating future health care professionals. Future doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, physician assistants and veterinarians choose Hiram College because we educate the type of health care professional that will succeed in the 21st century. We help you build not just a transcript, but also a portfolio of experiences that will help you achieve your medical career goals.

Students can choose to major in Nursing, Biomedical Humanities, Biology, Integrated Exercise Science, Public Health, Sports Management, and so much more.

Each of these majors is taught in an interdisciplinary way so that students have the advantage of exploring and analyzing pressing health issues and concerns from various disciplinary perspectives. This means that the aspiring health professionals Hiram sends into the world are not only scientifically and technically competent, but they are compassionate, thoughtful and culturally sensitive. Hiram’s holistic and integrative education helps ensure that the doctors, nurses and psychologists who graduate from here see their patients as ‘whole’ people rather than by the ailment or the disease they face.

Another key feature of Hiram Health is its partnership program it maintains with several esteemed institutes such as Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and Case Western Reserve University. Students who meet qualifications can enter a pipeline program that seamlessly moves them from Hiram to an M.D., D.D.M., Pharm.D., or M.S. Social Administration program.

Quote from Jason Close

The need for compassionate health care providers is rising.

The Association of American Medical Colleges predicts a shortage of up to 90,000 physicians by 2025. Similarly, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a need for 1 million additional nurses by 2022.

The numbers don’t lie. And our aging and diversifying population seeks health care providers who are not just highly skilled – but individualized, ethically grounded and compassionate.

Other colleges and institutions are meeting growing demands by churning health care students through cookie-cutter, heavily online programs. As a Hiram College graduate, you will stand out among your peers because of our humanistic, individualized approach to health care, our relationships with Ohio’s premier health care institutions and direct entry into graduate-level health programs, including medical school, dental school, pharmacy and social work.

What distinguishes us from other programs:

  • Hiram undergraduates are accepted to medical and veterinarian school at rates that almost double the national population.
  • The biomedical humanities major, with its unique focus on both the scientific and humanistic sides of health care, was the first of its kind in the nation and currently is the only such major of its kind offered in Ohio.
  • In the past few years, Hiram has established direct entry pipeline programs for NEOMED’s College of Medicine and Case Western Reserve University’s School of Dental Medicine. More programs like this are in the works.
