History’s Rhyme: Russia, Ukraine, and the Repetition of Discord

In this joint presentation, James Thompson will examine the long-term process of Russian imperialism, how that relates to Russia’s relations with Ukraine, and specifically how the current war is impacting Russia’s present and future prospects for power projection. Donald Fleming will address key moments in the history of the Russia-Ukraine relationship, analyzing their meaning, significance, and impact.

James Thompson is associate professor of political science and director of the James A. Garfield Center for Public Leadership at Hiram College. He received his B.A. from St. Mary’s College in California and his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. His teaching and research focus is international politics, including regional integration projects. He is also the co-coordinator of the World Government Research Network.

Donald Fleming has taught courses in modern and early modern European history at Hiram College since 1999.
