Gyasi’s novel tells the story of two half-sisters in Ghana: one marries an English slave trader; the other is captured and sold into slavery in America. J.J. Turner Lecture: Are you smarter than a trematode?The 2018 J.J. Turner Society award recipient, Thomas R. Platt ’71, Ph.D, will host talk. Parasites are the ultimate island hoppers. Going from host to host is a perilous task (think of Tom Hanks in Cast Away). In a homage to Dwight Berg and Jim Barrow who introduced Dr. Platt to the joy of scientific research, Tom shares some of the research done by his undergraduate students to answer the question “Are parasites smart or just clever?” And yes, this is the same Tom Platt who named a new genus and species of parasite after president Obama. Come use iPads with students in this interactive exploration of online resources that predict what species of trees might thrive best in different regions of the eastern US. Thinking of planting black cherry or sugar maple in NE Ohio? Think again. Learn how to hedge your bets when it comes to planting trees that we hope will last 150 years and more. Monitoring Nuclear Agreements with Iran and North Korea: Some Relevant Lessons from the PastIn this talk, John Lauder ‘68 will explore lessons from the perspective of a former intelligence officer and current advisor on arms control issues. He will focus on the challenges of monitoring agreements and the role of intelligence in that monitoring. Negotiating and implementing effective agreements with Iran and North Korea are vital but controversial and seemingly intractable tasks. Still, there are best practices from prior arms control and nonproliferation agreements that present instructive lessons. Location: Hinsdale 215Alumni ChoirSing to Hiram!
