Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was originally published in 1818, but she revised it extensively for the 1831 edition. Our community reading program is focused in the 1831 edition, the version most publishers print as it includes the last changes made by Shelley herself. Two key differences between the two versions focus on the role of fate in Victor Frankenstein’s actions and the role of Elizabeth Lavenza in Victor’s family. You can read about these changes in this excerpt from Anne K. Mellor’s book Mary Shelley: Her Life, Her Fiction, Her Monsters.
