Asian Studies Minor
Traditional Undergraduate
Asian Studies contributes to developing a fuller and more accurate account of world cultures, societies, religious traditions, and national and ethnic identity formation. It also examines the particular ways Asian political, historical, and cultural developments help to articulate their local interests and our interrelated global citizenry. This minor is an excellent springboard from which to launch a meaningful vocation in fields where in-depth knowledge of the socio-historical and cultural contexts of Asian ideas and institutions are essential.

Creative Writing Major

Students pursuing a minor in ethics focus on ethical theory and moral issues to develop their critical thinking and reflection skills. Most importantly, they learn to apply these skills to their major area of study and to service opportunities beyond the classroom. The ethics minor is designed to enhance each student’s education by enriching their awareness of ethical issues and by connecting their awareness to opportunities for action.

Film Studies Minor

The Film Studies minor teaches students about the history, interpretation, and creation of film as an art form that enables personal and cultural expression, as well as a documentary form that allows people to comment on the world around them.
This minor prepares students well for a wide variety of careers that will require them to design, write, and produce films for multiple markets and audiences.
As students in this minor, they will be knowledgeable in the traditions and conventions of this art form so that they can be savvy writers, directors, and producers. Students will learn the history of filmmaking, the techniques of film analysis, and the process of filmmaking, among other valuable skills. Therefore, film studies minors think critically about films they encounter in the world and become active, rather than passive, consumers.

In our multicultural world, looking at global issues, dynamics, societies, and cultures from an interdisciplinary academic perspective is vital. Hiram’s international studies program gives students an in-depth understanding of our global society, allowing them to devise solutions to urgent challenges through advocacy, diplomacy, defense, and development work. Students majoring or minoring in international studies examine contemporary global issues and also have an opportunity to focus their study on particular regions or topics of international interest.

Pre-Law Concentration

The field of law is important and exciting. And while Hiram College does not offer an actual pre-law degree, it does provide students with the guidance and coursework necessary to help them gain acceptance to law school after graduating from Hiram. Students can also choose to participate in the 3+3 BA/JD program through Hiram College's partnerships.

Language study helps students to open the way to understanding and communication with various peoples, cultures, civilizations and literature. It involves performance skills in the foreign language (speaking, reading, writing and understanding) and command of the subject matter (literature, history, language).

Hiram College’s liberal arts curriculum values the importance of communicating ones thoughts and ideas through writing. The minor in writing offers non-English majors the opportunity to focus on writing in a way that can augment their Hiram experience. Students can combine the minor with a wide range of other disciplines, including philosophy, math, environmental studies, biomedical humanities, psychology, communication, history and biology.
