Disability Studies

The Disability Studies minor at Hiram College offers an interdisciplinary exploration of disability as a social, cultural, political, and economic experience. Rather than centering medical or deficit-based perspectives, Disability Studies encourages students to think critically about how disability is defined, represented, and experienced within society.

About the Program

Students examine the historical and contemporary experiences of people with disabilities and consider how disability intersects with other socially constructed identities such as race, gender, sexuality, age, and social class. Through this lens, the minor deepens understanding of disability as a dynamic and multidetermined construct.

The Disability Studies minor also builds awareness of the barriers and opportunities faced by individuals with physical, cognitive, psychiatric, and sensory disabilities. It is an excellent complement to majors in the humanities, social sciences, education, health professions, psychology, and beyond — preparing students to engage thoughtfully and ethically in a diverse and inclusive world.
