9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Connecting During Corona: Supporting Students’ Social/Emotional Health Virtually Jen McCreight and Hajnal Eppley Join us as we share our responses to students’ and teachers’ heightened need for social/emotional connections during a pandemic. In this interactive session, we’ll practice the experimental strategies we’ve used (playing games virtually, exploring feelings through video, and having honest conversations online) when our interactions must take place over Zoom.
9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Stepping Out: How Hiram College Used Mobile Technology to Caption a Live Theater Production Alexia Kemerling and Evangeline Varonis Hiram College implemented a novel, cost-effective use of mobile technology to deliver live theater captioning. A paper script was copied, digitized, converted to readable text, transferred to PowerPoint, and uploaded to Nearpod. During the performance, theatergoers joined Nearpod as “students” to view the slides advanced by the “teacher.”
9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Minimizing Screen Time in K-12 Lessons: Experience from Abroad Varvara Bondarenko The presentation examines the ways how online learning can be effective while minimizing screen time in order to reduce strain on kids’ eyes. It offers 20/20 approach in a 40-minute lesson as well as gives practical tools for implementation.
9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Stocking the Essential Toolbox for Today’s Teacher Anthony Luscre Today’s teachers need to assemble their own well-equipped toolbox for teaching. Pencils, paper, books, a slate and chalk were basically all that was needed just 25 years ago; but today teachers need to have a lot more tools. Let’s “go shopping” to stock your toolbox, don’t worry, it’s all free!
9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Hyperdocs for Adult Learners Stefani Boutelier This session will explore how hyperdocs can be utilized and modeled for adult learners (e.g., PD). After this interactive session you will understand the basics of hyperdocs (i.e., engage, explore, explain, apply, share, extend), differentiation possibilities for all ages, and expansion of this digital tool for learning and creating.
9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Designing Online Instruction: What Makes for Effective Learning Bryan Drost In this interactive presentation, participants will learn what makes for effective online learning for students in grades K-5 and 6-12. A focus will be on the instructional design elements that connect familiar, traditional face-to-face instruction with perhaps the more unfamiliar, online components.
9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. The Story of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Jerry Csaki This presentation will be an inside look at some artifacts of the Pro Football Hall of Fame located in Canton, Ohio. You will learn about its history and ties to Northeast Ohio and the programs available to educators.
10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Opening Keynote:  Education After the Pandemic Bryan Alexander How will COVID-19 transform education? This session begins by sketching out how education has responded to the pandemic to date, highlighting major themes. We continue by exploring forecasts for the virus and how education may respond. Finally we envision the ways K-12 and academia might emerge from the other side of COVID.
11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Reflection in Action – Transitioning to Remote Teaching Chris Rennison To continue the education of millions, teachers quickly transitioned to remote instruction. This shift produced many new teaching strategies, tools, and creative adaptations to meet students’ needs. Relevant to all grade levels, session participants will reflect upon and share their experiences, insights and innovations borne out of this switch.
11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. FAnTASIA: Fairy Tale Science Augmented Anastasia Pyrini FAnTASIA project, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, aims at developing an educational package powered with augmented reality for the teaching of some basic scientific concepts & skills. It can be easily used by anyone regardless whether they are teachers, parents/guardians and regardless of their training.

In this session, you will learn how to create engaging video activities using a variety of tools, including Adobe Spark, Flipgrid, and Perusall, for your course.

12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. Explore the Hiram Living and Learning Community Leeanne Saro Take a pre-recorded tour of the Hiram Living and Learning Community, known to the local community simply as the Hiram Farm. The Hiram Farm is a nonprofit organization that provides services for adults with developmental disabilities, with an emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Farm provides opportunities for these adults to grow, learn, work, and live in a setting focused on respect and support for individuals and the environment.
12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. Beyond the Gate – Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens Toivo Motter In this session, Stan Hywet’s Director of Education will go “Beyond the Gate” to take you to the beautiful historic estate located in Akron, Ohio. Learn how onsite educational programming and guest experiences were re-imagined through social media and an interactive Google Map along with a series of distance learning sessions that explore the basics of landscape and architectural design via a Google Earth flyover of the gardens and a 3-D virtual walk through the first floor of the tutor-inspired Manor House.

Come join one of our museums educators to come and ask questions about our virtual programing and camps / field trips that we have developed during this time where digital content has become the new normal.  We can discuss how our content has been developed, methods for creating the lessons (including attaching learning standards), and how we hope these new ideas may be helpful for teachers in the upcoming school year and beyond.  We also hope to begin conversations on how we can better aid our teachers in this new normal of teaching by talking about what kind of content, field trips, or other materials we can create and provide!

What skills do our students need to be successful in their future? And how do we as educators embrace this change? Take a trip with Eric back to his first classroom to learn about the difference between “Process” and “Purpose”, to see what the future holds for our students, and explore the 4 C’s we need to teach our students to prepare them for what is ahead.
3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Co-Teaching* Contemporary World Religions with Morgan Freeman – or, Netflix as Pedagogy Jonathan Eskridge This session will discuss how Netflix is utilized as a primary resource in an undergraduate Contemporary World Religions course. Students have weekly access to modules of study, focusing on specific religions. As entry points for discussion, students are asked to watch films connected to each religion via Netflix.

This podcast offers practical career advice from active professionals for how students and graduates can kick-start their careers. This session will share strategies, resources, and how to get started.
3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. App Smashing for Active Learning: Creating Engaging and Meaningful Activities for Students Jonathan Zemmer This session will show participants how to design and utilize multiple apps for active learning, with an opportunity for discussion and application. Engaging in a hands-on activity, attendees will participate in small groups planning and creating an activity that utilizes two apps such as Clips, Flipgrid, Spark, and Explain Everything.

Participants will be able to experience first hand how digital drawing works and can be applied across all disciplines while actively immersing themselves in a digital drawing experience.
3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. A Case Study for Developing an Online-Competency-Based Education Infrastructure at a Four-Year Private University Angela Dunn and Terry Keller This presentation explores the process for establishing a sustainable online competency-based education (CBE) infrastructure in a higher education setting. Presenters will provide a CBE toolkit, strategies for defining CBE within an institution, and factors that determine which stakeholders should be involved with the development process.

Utilizing CoI allows for technology enhancement and overcoming barriers. Provide an opportunity to understand framework, principles, and guidelines of CoI as a catalyst within learning environments.
5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. Artisinal Pedagogy in the Age of Remote Learning Alexander Alderman I will outline the program that staff at Kenyon College’s Center for Innovative Pedagogy developed to train faculty rapidly for remote instruction while preserving the school’s focus on personal connection and individual autonomy. Then, I will share out summer programming for helping faculty plan for flexible options for the fall.

Thus, please join Dr. Beatty as he presents his research regarding online learning via his doctoral research, current research, and the complexity educators may experience in their future educational endeavors.
5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. Incorporating a 1-1 iPad Program: A Case Study in Higher Education Emily Myers This presentation analyzes the process of incorporating a 1-1 iPad program into a higher education curriculum. We discuss the theories, strategies, and technologies necessary to build and sustain a program. Additionally, we examine the process of pivoting the program to continue to serve students during social distancing requirements.
5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. Taya Pocock Common Humanity, Ethics, and Service Learning as New Critical Skills for Students in a Post-Pandemic Environment

During this presentation, I will be introducing educators to the model of SEE Learning which was developed by the Dalai Lama and Emory University and expand how organizations are using this approach to meet the new and changing demands of students in these uncertain and critical times. In particular, I will be highlighting the educational curriculum of CIT (Compassionate Integrity Training), which provides a 10-week compassionate and resiliency-based curriculum for students to be able to learn about how they relate to themselves, others and systems. As a continuation of this, Humanity360 engages youths on the level of systems with regards to finding purpose and joy through effective altruism in the form of service-based volunteerism. Now more than ever, we need to emphasize the importance of recognizing human capital and our ability to act in creating a more just and humane society. Youths are demanding action and we are proposing a compassion-based curriculum that encourages youths to become actively involved in shaping their futures by being of service at local non-profit organizations addressing socio-economic and globally pressing issues. Topics range from Human Rights, to Homelessness and Protection, to The Generational Contract, Food Democracy, and many more (see www.humanity360.org). We will be highlighting current practices and goals, online course implementation as well as our desire to distribute this content through an online teacher training program.

The first, led by Professor Jenn Clark, was led through Hiram College’s 360 acre Biological Field Station where she teaches you about the different areas of the Field Station as you go. The second is a simple hike with a simple introduction and then enjoy a leisurely stroll exploring a beautiful bike path created by Hiram College and the Portage County Parks System.
