Our mission is to cultivate in students a deep understanding of the institution of the presidency and the individuals who have held the office.
Honoring Hiram College’s connection to James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, the Garfield Center for the Study of the American Presidency chooses a different American president to study each year, with students examining issues that get to the very core of presidential leadership.
Students from all majors are invited to apply to be Garfield Presidency Scholars. In addition to participating in on-campus events, lectures by guest speakers, small group discussions and outreach efforts with local schools, Scholars have the opportunity to network with subject-matter experts and travel to historical destinations relevant to the respective president’s life and work.
Through the various on-campus activities, study tours and reflective assignments, Garfield Presidency Scholars gain profound appreciation for the president as person, a historical figure and a leader within the broader and complex governmental system.
