Hiram College

Northeast Ohio is vigorously working to re-define itself as “The Medical Capital” – an aim that aligns directly with Hiram College’s enduring strength in the life sciences. This strength is enriched by Hiram’s first of its kind interdisciplinary approach that utilizes literature and the arts to prepare students to face critical bioethical issues. This approach will prepare Hiram’s Choose Ohio First (COF) scholars for future careers in: Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Humanities, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Nursing, Neuroscience, and Integrated Exercise Science. Hiram’s unique interdisciplinary program produces strong results for our graduates, 66% of which obtain MD and DO primary care residencies – a rate that far exceed the national average of 38%.

COF scholars will also have access to the College’s unique and well-established partnerships, including Hiram’s post-baccalaureate pathways with NEOMED (in Medicine and Pharmacy), with Case Western Reserve University (in Dental Medicine, Bioengineering and Social Work).

Recipients of COF scholarships stem from a various educational backgrounds. Hiram encourages applications from students in our Community College Partnerships programs with Cuyahoga Community College, Lakeland Community College, and Lorain County Community College, as well as recent high school graduates.

If you apply, and you are selected, what do we expect from you?

Students selected to receive Choose Ohio First Scholarships will be expected to participate in an engaged, hands-on learning program. Through their active participation in this program, students will be introduced to NE Ohio’s burgeoning health and biotech industries – working with faculty mentors to establish personal career goals and to develop a plan for academic and work experiences that prepare them for Ohio’s in-demand careers. This preparation will require students to engage in multiple, hands-on opportunities, such as: community health projects, basic medical research, and biotech internships with Hiram’s industry partners.

This preparation will be augmented by Hiram’s Connect, Health, and Tech and Trek initiatives, which combine to provide students with the 21st century career skills needed to succeed both professionally and personally.
