Goals

Hiram College has identified several near-term targets for carbon emissions reduction and campus sustainability. Over the next five years, Hiram College will:

  • Reduce campus-wide water use by a minimum of 20-30% through increased efficiency, water-recycling, education campaigns, and other means to encourage behavioral change
  • Reduce campus-wide electricity use by a minimum of 10-15% through increased efficiency, education campaigns, and other means to encourage behavioral change
  • Replace at least 50% of fossil-fuel based electricity with renewable power through a combination of on-campus solar and/or wind power generation and purchase of renewable energy
  • Reduce natural gas use by a minimum of 10-15% through increased efficiency, education campaigns, and other means to encourage behavioral change
  • Secure funding for and introduce a Sustainability-Across-the-Curriculum Program
  • Establish an e-cycling program for institutional, student, and local community electronic waste
  • Increase carbon offsets by 10-25% of current levels through acquisition of forested lands and/or partnerships for grassland, wetland, and forest protection and restoration
  • Build new construction to at least the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver standard or equivalent
  • Purchase ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist
