Emerging Writers Workshop: Elements of Creative Writing
June 17-19, 2014 (Residential)
Age: Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors
The Emerging Writers Workshop: Elements of Creative Writing introduces high school students to the central components of the craft of creative writing—voice, character and scene. Participants will step back from longer stories to concentrate on writing short pieces that develop their skills as writers by creating inventive responses to writing and applying techniques discussed in the workshop. Participants will have a chance to share their work with others and gather responses in order to make thoughtful and effective revisions. The workshop will conclude with a public reading of students' work that family and friends are encouraged to attend.
Hiram College will award a $1,000 scholarship to every high school student who attends a 2014 summer academy and enrolls as a full time student at Hiram College. Renewable up to four years. (Potential of $4,000 total in scholarship award.)

Where is the Emerging Writers Workshop: Elements of Creative Writing?
The Emerging Writers Workshop: Elements of Creative Writing is a three-day, residential summer learning experience held on the Hiram College campus, located in Hiram, Ohio. Hiram's campus is a 45-minute drive from Cleveland and Akron. Participants will stay two nights in a residence hall.
Participants will also be able to spend time in the Love Writing House while on campus. The Queen Anne style house at 6811 Hinsdale Street is home to Hiram College writers. It was built in the 1890s and served in the early years as a boarding house for students. In 2008, the house was given to the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature exclusively for the support and encouragement of Hiram's talented writers. Classes, readings, and social events are held in the Love Writing House throughout the year, contributing to the distinctive experience Hiram College offers its emerging writers.
