What is the 2012 emerging writers workshop in creative nonfiction?
At Hiram College’s Emerging Writers Workshop, promising young authors will develop their voice and hone their writing skills in the expanding genre of creative nonfiction. In this three-day residential learning experience on the Hiram College campus, students with a passion for writing will work closely with Hiram faculty to create new work, revise existing pieces, and use research creatively to enhance their writing. One session will focus on writing about place in the fields and woods at the Hiram College Field Station. The Workshop will conclude with a public reading of students’ work that family and friends are encouraged to attend. The Emerging Writers Workshop fosters the authors of tomorrow.
What is creative nonfiction?
Creative nonfiction is the exploration of fact using the craft of literature. The genre examines real people, places, and events through evocative, surprising language and unique voice. The various forms of creative nonfiction include personal essay, memoir, and literary journalism.
Who conducts the Emerging Writer's Workshop in Creative Nonfiction?
Mary Quade is Assistant Professor of English and a published poet. She teaches poetry, nonfiction, fiction, and screen writing at Hiram College; she will lead the revision workshops.
Jeffrey Swenson is Assistant Professor of English and Director of Writing Across the Curriculum. He teaches creative writing and American literature; he will teach the sessions on writing about place at the Field Station.
When and where is the Emerging Writers Workshop in Creative Nonfiction?
The Emerging Writers Workshop will be held June 21 - 23, 2012.
The Emerging Writers Workshop will take place on the campus of Hiram College, a 45-minute drive from Cleveland and Akron. Participants will stay two nights in a Hiram College residence hall.
Participants will also be able to spend time in the Writing House while on campus. The Queen Anne style house at 6811 Hinsdale Street is home to Hiram College writers. It was built in the 1890s and served in the early years as a boarding house for students. In 2008 the house was given to the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature exclusively for the support and encouragement of Hiram's talented writers. Classes, readings, and social events are held in the Writing House throughout the year, contributing to the distinctive experience Hiram College offers its emerging writers.
