Hiram Neuroscience Academy

June 22-25, 2014 (Residential)

Age:  Rising juniors and seniors

Cost:  $300

Dogs are known for their powerful sense of smell which has led to their use in law enforcement to detect bombs, cadavers, drugs, and survivors of catastrophes such as earthquakes. What gives dogs their acute sense of smell?  Some breeds of dogs have ten times as many olfactory (sense of smell) cells than humans in their noses.  On the surface of these numerous cells are odor-detecting proteins called olfactory receptors that differ in type and number. In this Neuroscience Academy we will analyze the molecules used to detect odors, explore how learning to do these tasks is accomplished in dogs and other odor-driven species, and compare that to how humans use their sense of smell. Students will isolate DNA from their adopted dog and will sequence that DNA in order to examine the olfactory receptors present. In the learning segments students will conduct experiments with human subjects to explore the role of olfaction as it relates to taste and memory, and rat subjects to explore their superior odor discrimination abilities.

Hiram College will award a $1,000 scholarship to every high school student who attends a 2014 summer academy and enrolls as a full time student at Hiram College.  Renewable up to four years.  (Potential of $4,000 total in scholarship award.)

Who conducts the Hiram Neuroscience Academy?
