What is the hiram genomics academy?
The 2008 Hiram Genomics Academy is a four-day, residential summer learning experience held on the Hiram College campus, located in Hiram, Ohio, and designed to engage the next generation of young scientists in a cutting-edge biological discipline. Twenty of Northeast Ohio's most promising high school seniors will be selected to participate in each session, where they will learn and use microbiology, molecular biology, and genomics concepts and skills while taking part in ongoing research projects. The objective of the academy is to excite these students about the great scientific questions waiting to be explored and encourage them to make research a part of their upcoming college training.
What is Genomics?
A gene is a segment of DNA that says "make a particular protein at a particular time and place." Over most of the past 50 years, scientists have studied genes and the proteins they encode one at a time. While this approach has been highly successful, there are questions that are best addressed by looking at many or all of the genes of an organism at the same time. All the genes of an organism are known collectively as its genome, and the study of genomes is called genomics.
WHAT DOES THE HIRAM GENOMICS ACADEMY COST?
The Hiram Genomics Academy is free for participants.
Who conducts the hiram genomics academy?
Brad Goodner, member of the biology department at Hiram College, teaches molecular and cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, and bioinformatics. All of his courses involve students in original research, and many of the students move into independent research projects.
Who is invited to participate?
The 2008 Hiram Genomics Academy is aimed at outstanding science students from high schools throughout Northeast Ohio. Each high school in the region is invited to nominate two students who will be seniors in the fall of 2008, have a strong science background, and an interest in pursuing a career in science. From the nominees, twenty students will be invited to participate in each session.
WhEN and Where is the HIRAM GENOMICS ACADEMY?
Two sessions of the Hiram Genomics Academy will be held during the summer of 2008.
Session I: June 25-28, 2008
Session II: July 9-12, 2008
Each high school student who is invited to participate will attend only one session. The Hiram Genomics Academy will take place on the campus of Hiram College, a 45-minute drive from Cleveland and Akron. Participants will stay three nights in a Hiram College residence hall.

HOW TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS
High school guidance counselors and teachers are invited to nominate high school students who will be seniors in the fall of 2008 for the Hiram Genomics Academy. We assume guidance counselors and teachers are nominating students with whom they have spoken about the Hiram Genomics Academy and who show an interest in attending.
Click on the "submit a nomination" link above and fill out the registration form online. Each high school may nominate two students. Please submit one registration form per student.
Space is limited, so please nominate students early. The deadline for submission is May 23, 2008.
