About Hiram College Summer Flute Workshop
Join Hiram Flute Instructor, Bryan Kennard and Albuquerque Flutist Danielle Frabutt in a two day workshop designed to provide high-school aged flutists with activities centered on ensemble playing, technical facility, tone development, and practice techniques. Each student will participate in chamber ensembles, group building activities, shared meal time, clinics that will cover various aspects of flute playing, and a session on Dalcroze Eurhythmics. There will be a faculty recital on the first day and a Saturday evening concert, both open to the public. All participants will enjoy rehearsing in Frohring Music Hall on the campus of Hiram College. This facility boasts a large, air-conditioned rehearsal/recital hall, three large classrooms, a seminar room, seven teaching studios, and eight practice rooms. Resident students will stay in supervised college dormitories overnight. Two meals on Friday and three on Saturday are included in the cost. Non-resident commuters are required to attend all rehearsals and scheduled activities. Evening social activities are optional.
Application Process and Payment Information
Applications and fees must be submitted by June 1, 2009. There is no enrollment auditions but a recommendation letter, written by a private instructor or music teacher, is requested before the application deadline. Information, ensemble music, and maps will be mailed to students at least one month prior to the start of the workshop. Resident: $125 Includes overnight facilities, meals, T-shirt, and workshop materials.
Non-Resident/Commuter: $100 Includes lunch and dinner both days, T-shirt, and workshop materials.
Location
The Hiram College Summer Flute Workshop is located at Hiram College, which is approximately 35 minutes from Cleveland, Akron and Warren in the beautiful Western Reserve region of Northern Portage County, Ohio.
Bryan Kennard
Bryan Kennard is the Instructor of Flute and Jazz Improvisation, and coaches flute ensembles at Hiram College. An active performer and recitalist, Mr. Kennard performs and teaches extensively throughout the region. Alongside several classical recitals each year, he has experience as a jazz improviser, composer, and arranger. He regularly performs with, and has recorded with, Cleveland based bluegrass group, Brand New Hat. Mr. Kennard’s classical compositions and arrangements have been performed across the country. In April, members of the Greater Cleveland Flute Society will perform his flute quartet Greensleeves Adrift at the Cleveland Composer Connection Concert. Mr. Kennard received his BM in Music Education from Mercyhurst College and his MM in Performance from Youngstown State University.
Danielle Frabutt
Danielle Frabutt is a freelance flutist, private instructor originally from the Youngstown Area. Now living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Miss Frabutt is working on her Masters of Music with the Woodwind Graduate Assistant Position. Miss Frabutt has taught privately for seven years and has led group clinics in local schools. She currently holds a studio in Albuquerque. As a performer, she has toured with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra for three summers, played in the Greenville Symphony Orchestra as a guest principle flutist and piccoloist. She was the recording flutist for Take Note Production in Youngstown and can be heard on cds by Kari Kandel and the Austin Fire Department as well as the AWSO’s most recent two cds. She has her BM of Music Performance from Youngstown State University.
Any additional instruction will be given by professional musicians.
