Zambia is a country "rich in natural beauty but exceedingly poor in economic development." Traveling throughout the country, students will experience the ever-present reality of extreme contrasts of great beauty, limited economic initiatives, and stark poverty, yet a very happy, intelligent and peaceful population.
Consistent with Hiram's mission to prepare our students to face the urgent challenges of the times, healthcare is a universal topic to examine. The focus of this study abroad trip will include closer examination of health services through the lenses of environmental factors, public policy, traditional culture, psycho-social influences, education and economics.
By studying health issues from multiple disciplines, students will see the intentional and unintentional effects on the health and overall well being of the Zambian people. Students from a variety of perspectives will find this opportunity relevant to their area of interest.

INTD 25000 (EW): Comparative Issues in Zambia
Visit the University of Zambia, including the institution’s medical center; government offices and organizations such as the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization; and an alternative orphanage with a school and health facility integrated into the local village. Learn about the conservation philosophies of the country. Experience protected encounters with the native fauna during excursions to two wildlife facilities
The group will visit the rural Kakumbi Health Clinic, The Mfuwe Basic Schools, the South Luangwa Conservation Society, and spend time in a local village. The villages in Mfuwe are extremely primitive with families living in grass-thatched roof homes without electricity or running water. Experience the grand beauty of South Luangwa National Park – home to a wide variety of large game animals, birds, and vegetation – through morning and evening safari excursions.
This southern town on the boarder of Zimbabwe will be the highlight of the trip as students see the largest waterfall in the world, Victoria Falls. Students will visit Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, Maramba Cultural Village, Livingstone Hospital, and the Livingstone Museum which features a major exhibit on Dr. David Livingstone, the physician and explorer who discovered Victoria Falls.
Students will also volunteer in the local village and at a lion conservatory.
Zimbabwe and Botswana
Travel to Zimbabwe for the day to see Victoria Falls from the other side and spend a day in Botswana to explore Chobe National Park.
- Estimated Program Costs: $6,300 (above tuition costs); This estimate includes round-trip airfare from Cleveland, group ground transportation, accommodations, group field trip expenses and group admissions to organized activities. Passport fees, personal expenses, optional trips or other activities, and independent travel are not covered.
- Application Deadline: March 8, 2017; A $75 non-refundable fee is due upon receipt of completed application. This fee is used to pay for processing costs, and International Student Identity Card, passport holder, and luggage tags.
