Planning Your Job Search - Nursing
Write an Effective Resume
Explaining your qualifications on a resume is a key part of an effective job search. If you are not sure what skills or qualifications to stress on your resume, get hints by reading a nursing job posting online. The Qualifications section of the job posting will tell you what skills, clinical experience, education and personal traits will be evaluated in the hiring process.
Many employers will expect you to post your resume in an electronic resume database. Read the suggestions in the Nursing Resume Guide on the use of keywords to be sure your qualifications are noticed.
Be sure to have your resume draft reviewed in the Career Center and/or by your nursing advisor before you send it to an employer. We want you to present yourself in the best possible way!
Add an Persuasive Cover E-mail/Letter
When you submit a resume for a job or internship, you should always include a cover email if you are applying electronically or a cover letter if you are applying via U.S. mail.
Prepare to Offer References
Many employers request references if they decide to interview you but not before. Read each application or website carefully to see what they expect. Do not include names of references on your website. See the Nursing Guide for sample reference pages.
