Student Life Staff

Vice-President & Dean of Students

To serve the president and collaborate with senior staff colleagues in accomplishing the mission of Hiram College; to oversee the budgets, programs, and functions of the student life division; to supervise the directors and heads of all divisional programs and functions; to determine priorities, goals, and objectives for all divisional programs and functions; to serve on college committees as determined by the president of the college.

Associate Vice President of Student Affairs/Associate Dean of Students

To report directly to the Vice President/Dean of Students; to supervise the Campus Safety Department and Citizenship Education; to coordinate new student orientation and institute; teach in the first year program and one-credit Student Development classes; to act as a liaison to the Athletic Department; serve as the chair of the campus emergency response team; coordinate family/parent programs and retention services; serve on college committees as determined by the Vice President/Dean of Students.

Senior Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Education

To report directly to the Vice President/Dean of Students; to collaborate in the maintenance, furnishings and renovation of all student residential space; to oversee the staffing, selection and training of all residential personnel; to teach students how to speak for themselves, resolve conflicts, be accountable to each other and develop a sense of community; to collaborate in making the residential environment a co-curricular laboratory for the achievement of the College's student learning outcomes; to supervise commuter student services and serve on College committees as determined by the Vice President.Vice

 

Associate Dean of Students/Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion

To report directly to the Vice President & Dean of Students; to support Hiram College in preparing all graduates for success in a culturally diverse global community; to provide focused attention on both the quality of life of minority students and issues directly affecting them; to  promote cultural diversity as a core academic value within the entire Hiram community through active involvement in committees, Admission Outreach initiatives, group training and development, special events and programs, advising, consultation, teaching, and presentations;  to develop, implement and evaluate programs that will result in increased minority retention and graduation, to provide information, direction, and community programs that will develop and/or increase awareness and respect for diversity, to establish and maintain an effective system for reporting acts of intolerance or incidents that breach the College's Statement on Diversity and identify trends that indicate patterns of intolerance, and to generate awareness of the cognitive, developmental, and vocational value of diversity.

Director of Campus Involvement

To report directly to the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Office of Diversity and Inclusion; to advise and serve as a resource for all student organizations and clubs;  to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff in developing an active community of co-curricular opportunities that promote growth and learning; to promote the development of diverse, educational, and entertaining programs that engage students; to address issues important to students and uphold the mission of the college; to collaboratively plan and coordinate the New Student Institute program; to coordinate the KULAS Trips program; to assist with the development of student leaders through experiential activities and training.

Director of Career Center

To report directly to the Vice President/Dean of Students; to assist all Hiram College students with their career development by providing counseling, educational programs, and resources to help them make satisfying career choices from a broad range of liberal arts careers; to work with the faculty, staff, alumni and employers; to develop employer relationships and plan events; to create and maintain strong internship and employment programs; and to maintain online as well as print resources for students, faculty and alumni.

Director of Counseling Services/Coordinator of Student Disability Services

To report directly to the Vice President/Dean of Students; to provide short-term counseling/psychological therapy to students enrolled in traditional college; to assist in referring students to community mental health resources as needed or desired; to provide educational resources for students, faculty and staff; to consult with students, faculty and staff about challenging situations or students of concern; to review student requests for retroactive medical withdrawals from coursework; to collaborate with other staff members and departments on projects and events; to serve on college committees as assigned/elected; to participate on community mental health groups; to review disability documentation and requests and approve appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations; to prepare and send letters of accommodation to faculty and coaches; to seek, order or submit publisher permissions requests for alternative text formats; to assist students as needed; to consult with faculty and staff about students and/or accommodation needs; to maintain contact with SAS in order to coordinate service needs and monitor progress; to collaborate with the Admission staff in meeting with prospective students/families with questions about campus support services for students with special needs; to participate in orientation information sessions for family members to provide education about campus services and limitations of service and to help prepare new students for their transition to campus life.

Director of International Student Services

To report directly to the Associate Dean of Students/Director of Office of Diversity and Inclusion; to advocate for international student needs on campus; to assist international students and scholars with orientation to campus life, transition to a new culture, and general culture shock issues, and to provide support in the areas of medical care, health insurance, study/tutoring needs, transportation, and immigration related matters. Additionally, the Director facilitates the Hiram College Friendly Family Program and general student placements with families for holiday celebrations.

Director of Julia Church Health Center

To report directly to the Vice President/Dean of Students; to deliver and oversee patient care of college students; to develop policies and procedures in collaboration with the college physician and nursing staff; supervises Julia Church Health Center and on-call nursing staff; oversees active and passive health and wellness education of the student body; Travel clinic coordinator; Community health liaison.

Director of Student Academic Services

To report directly to the Vice President/Dean of Students; to improve a student's academic and personal achievements; to provide a structured outreach to students who are not achieving their full academic potential;  to contact students who are underachieving, develop a rapport with them and evaluate the personal, academic, and social factors that may be negatively influencing their academic performance, as well as provide effective advising, and/or specific academic services.

Coordinator of Citizenship Education

To report directly to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs/Associate Dean of Students; to oversee the Community Council and other judicial boards dealing with student conduct; to uphold and interpret the rights and responsibilities of all students through fair and consistent policy enforcement; to advise the RA committee responsible for Citizenship Education issues; to educate residents, staff and faculty on citizenship education, voter registration, and election issues; and to serve on committees as determined by the Associate Dean.

Coordinator of Housing

To report directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential & Commuter Education; to manage student housing assignments including all related data; to coordinate all aspects of room sign-up and room change procedures; to collaborate in the maintenance, furnishings and renovation of all student residential space; to manage the Residential & Commuter Education office budget and to work collaboratively with the Residential & Commuter Education staff in addressing student and family concerns regarding housing.
