Campus Emergency Response Team Information

Updated December 1, 2009

If there is an emergency on campus, call the Ravenna Emergency Call Center at 330.569.5414 (x5414 from on campus) or The Office of Campus Safety Services at 330.569.5188 (x5188 from on campus).

In 2005, Hiram College established the Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) to assume responsibility for the institution’s emergency response plan that had long been in place. CERT’s membership includes campus-wide representation from Student Life, College Relations, Campus Safety Services, the Physical Plant, Dining Services, the Health Center, Academic Affairs, Computing Services, and Human Resources. CERT meets regularly to plan for disruptions in service ranging from inclement weather or a power outage to violence on campus or a natural disaster.

CERT is currently updating its emergency response plan in the event of cases of H1N1 influenza at Hiram College. CERT is working closely with county and state public health officials to monitor the status of H1N1 and develop proper prevention and response procedures.

We are encouraging self-isolation for all faculty, staff and students who exhibit at least two flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue). This means that employees should consult with their supervisors regarding their absence from work. Students should not attend class or participate in activities.

The total number of confirmed cases of influenza among students at Hiram College since October 1, 2009, is 44. The Health Center continues to evaluate students on a daily basis. Students who test positive for influenza and are able to return home do so, while others practice self-isolation to prevent the spread of influenza on campus. In most cases, influenza symptoms subside within four to six days. With your cooperation, we hope that the impact of both the seasonal flu and H1N1 flu on the Hiram College campus is minimal.
