English Major

Through the study of literature, we understand not only others but ourselves. Literature connects us to the past, present, and future; it links us to our local community and to the world. The major in English at Hiram College is a vibrant and flexible program that encourages students to study a wide range of literary traditions (including British, American, world, and post-colonial literature), allows them to explore topics in depth, and supports their development a personalized focus of study, if desired. Coursework in English expands students' critical reading and thinking skills while ensuring the development of superior writing abilities by requiring the completion of extensive research projects and analytical papers. Students learn to ask intelligent questions of literature and life and to express themselves in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Creative Writing Major

Writers are the voice of a culture. They show us who we are and what we want to be. Hiram College is one of the few colleges in Ohio that offers a major in Creative Writing. The Creative Writing major at Hiram allows students to explore their talent as writers of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, drama, and screenplays through an emphasis on reading, craft and technique, genre study, workshops, and revision. The Creative Writing major combines extensive coursework in writing with literature classes. Students have ample opportunities to improve their own voice and technique while learning about careers in the writing field. The program focuses on literary writing and encourages writers to locate themselves within a literary tradition.

English Minor

The English minor acquaints students with the richness of the literary tradition. Hiram students completing the minor in English must take the introductory course as well as a range of courses at the intermediate and advanced level. Students interested in interdisciplinary study have combined the English minor with majors in biology, biomedical humanities, history, art, communication, philosophy, foreign languages, and political science.

Writing Minor

The English Department at Hiram also provides a unique minor in Writing that is specifically designed to complement other programs at the college and has been combined with majors in biology, biomedical humanities, history, philosophy, sociology, mathematics, and environmental studies. Students who minor in Writing take courses from a broad range of genres, may complete a writing-related internship, and participate in a public reading of their work during their senior year.
