Professor and Chair of Chemistry
B.A., Carleton College
Ph.D., Iowa State University
Office: 107 Gerstacker Hall
I am a synthetic organic chemist by training. I've continued my interest in synthetic organic chemistry at Hiram College where I have engaged a number of undergraduates in small research projects aimed at designing new methods to synthesize interesting molecules. Some of the synthetic projects my undergraduates and I have worked on during the last four years are listed below. Organometallic approaches to the synthesis of arylacetic acids, synthesis and electrochemistry of porphyrins, synthesis of macrocyclic precursors to Taxol, and applications of the Sugawasa reaction to the synthesis of quinolone alkaloids
I grew up in Rochester Minnesota, spending lots of time on my grandparents' farms. I love canoeing, cross-country skiing, backpacking, hiking and bicycling. My favorite vacation area is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. I enjoy spending time with my spouse and our two golden retrievers, Carter and Humphrey.
