HIRAM, OHIO — Freshman midfielder Alaina Giesen (Medina/Buckeye) scored a pair of goals as the Hiram College women’s soccer team defeated Manchester (Ind.) College in a one-sided game, 5-1, tonight (Friday, Sept. 10) at the Hiram Soccer Complex. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers even their record at 2-2 overall, while the Spartans fall to 1-3 overall for the season.
Hiram struck early and often in the first half taking just 2:07 to score its first goal. Sophomore midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel) put the Terriers on the board with the game’s first score with an assist from junior midfielder Caitlin Fortson (Ravenna). Less than a minute later, Fortson would score a goal of her own on an unassisted marker at the 3:01 minute mark to increase the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Stephanie Takeuchi (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) recorded her team-leading third goal of the season during the 16th minute to stretch the margin to a commanding 3-0. Senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference forward Claire Conner (Aurora) was credited with an assist on the Fortson goal. Hiram continued the scoring later in the period with Giesen’s first goal of the game during the 22nd minute as the Terriers would boast a 4-0 advantage at the half. Takeuchi added to her team-best season point total with an assist on Giesen’s first goal.
In the second half, Giesen found the back of the net for the second time with an unassisted goal at the 62:44 mark to blow the game open as Hiram led 5-0. Nearing the final minutes of the game, Manchester ended the possible shutout with a score from Julia Pierce during the 78th minute. But Hiram already had the game in hand as the Terriers cruised to a 5-1 victory.
Senior Emily Bristol (Worcester, N.Y./Worcester Central) started the game and played 85:33 minutes to claim the win and improve to 2-2 on the season. She allowed the lone goal and made five saves. Sophomore Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) played the final 4:27 allowing no goals and made no saves.
Hiram will travel to Angola, Ind. on Sunday (Sept. 12) for a non-conference matchup against Trine University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
