Hiram College

The Hiram College women’s soccer team was shut out by Wittenberg University, 5-0, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Springfield.

With the loss, the Terriers fall to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC.  The Tigers improve to 6-2-2 overall and 3-0 NCAC.

Wittenberg looked to dominate early and recorded its first goal just 6:34 into the game on a header from Kayla Murphy on a corner kick to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.  Hiram managed just two shots against Wittenberg and were outshot, 27-2, for the game.  The Tigers went on to add two more scores in the period with goals during the 22nd and 31st minutes from Kailey Striebel and Kaylee Gialamas as Wittenberg led 3-0 at the intermission.

In the second half, Wittenberg struck early again, this time with a goal from Chelsey Marcum at the 49:36 minute mark to increase the lead to 4-0.  The Tigers recorded their final goal of the game during the 68th minute with an unassisted goal from Grace Winzeler en route to the 5-0 win.

Senior goalkeeper Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) started the game for Hiram and played the first 45 minutes allowing three goals while making five saves.  She would also be credited with the loss and is now 2-3-2 overall for the season.  Freshman Kailie Reed(Wadsworth) played the final 45 minutes giving up two goals and had six saves.

Hiram returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 9 when it hosts Allegheny (Pa.) College in a NCAC game in Hiram.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
