The Hiram College women’s soccer comeback bid fell short as the Terriers suffered their first loss of the season, 2-1, at the hands of John Carroll University in a non-conference game in Unviersity Heights.
John Carroll (3-3-1) scored quickly in the first half at the 4:23 minute mark to give the Blue Streaks an early lead. The lone goal was the only point scored between the two teams in the first 45 minutes as JCU maintained a slim one-goal advantage heading into the locker rooms.
In the second half, JCU added to its lead with what turned out to be the game-winning goal during the 52nd minute to extend the margin to 2-0. Hiram (5-1) cut the deficit in half late in the game with a goal by freshman Alison Cowell (Bridgeton, Mo./Duchesne) during the 86th minute making the score 2-1. The Terriers could not net the game-tying goal in the final minutes as JCU hung on for the 2-1 victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) played all 90 minutes and is now 5-1 overall for the season. She allowed two goals and had four saves.
Hiram will travel to Greencastle, Ind. on Saturday, Sept. 21 for a matchup against DePauw (Ind.) University in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
