OBERLIN, OHIO — Senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference forward Claire Conner (Aurora) scored both goals as the Hiram College women’s soccer team snapped a six-game losing streak and a nine-game winless streak in a 2-1 win against Oberlin College today (Saturday, Oct. 23) in Oberlin. With the win, the Terriers improve to 5-11-2 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen fall to 4-13 overall and 1-5 NCAC.
Conner tallied both of her goals in the first half, but would need just 6:41 to record her first score on an unassisted goal to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. Near the midway point of the period, Conner found the back of the net for the second time during the 23rd minute. The goal turned out to be the game winner and was assisted by junior midfielder/forward Caitlin Fortson (Ravenna) as Hiram led 2-0 at the intermission.
In the second half, Oberlin cut the lead in half with a goal at the 56:37 mark by Hannah Combe, making the score 2-1. But despite being outshot, 9-3, in the half, Hiram kept Oberlin from recording the game-tying goal and hung on for the 2-1 victory.
Hiram senior goalkeeper Emily Bristol (Worcester, N.Y./Worcester Central) played all 90 minutes and got the win to improve to 5-10-2 overall for the season. She allowed the lone goal and made eight saves.
Hiram will wrap-up the 2010 season next Saturday, Oct. 30 when it hosts Denison University in the home finale at the Hiram Soccer Complex. It will also be senior day with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
