All-North Coast Athletic Conference junior Kelsey Martin (Austintown/Fitch) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Hiram College women’s soccer team defeated Heidelberg University, 2-1, in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.
Heidelberg (1-7-1) struck first with a goal just 9:08 into the game from Nichole Johnson to make the score 1-0. Hiram (7-3) evened the score at 1-1 when freshman Robynn McGroarty(Oakville, Ontario/Loyola Catholic) netted her eighth goal of the season during the 17th minute with an assist from fellow freshman Allie Glatt (Cincinnati/Seton). The two goals were all the scoring in the first 45 minutes as the two teams went to the locker rooms deadlocked at 1-1.
In the second half, the Terriers had a 15-0 shot advantage, but could not record the go-ahead goal as the game remained tied at 1-1 after regulation, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, Hiram wasted no time scoring the game-winner as a shot by McGroarty hit the cross bar and deflected back to Martin who was able to kick the ball into the net. The goal would come at the 91:38 minute mark and McGroarty was credited with the assist as Hiram went on to claim the 2-1 victory.
In goal for Hiram, freshman Bailey Norton (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) started the game and played all 90 minutes to get her first collegiate victory. She allowed the lone goal and had one save.
Hiram will travel to Granville for a NCAC game against Denison University on Saturday, Oct. 5. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
