The Hiram College women’s lacrosse team was defeated by Thiel (Pa.) College, 17-2, in a non-conference game in Greenville, Pa.
Thiel (5-6) jumped out early scoring its first goal of the game just 11 seconds into the first half to grab the 1-0 lead. Hiram (3-4) evened the score just over three minutes later when freshman Hannah Schaefer (Kent/Roosevelt) netted a goal, her team-leading ninth of the season, on a free-position shot making the score 1-1. The Tomcats then posted four unanswered goals to retake the lead and have a 5-1 advantage with 16:29 left in the period. The Terriers scored what turned out to be their final goal of the game at the 14:13 mark on a free-position shot by senior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) that found the back of the net to narrow the gap to 5-2. Thiel rounded out the scoring in the first half with a pair of scores to lead 7-2 at the intermission.
In the second half, the offense would all come from Thiel as the Tomcats scored 10 times in the final 30 minutes en route to the 17-2 overall victory.
The only point scorers for Hiram in the game were Schaefer and Valaitis with their unassisted goals.
In net, freshman Rebecca Greenhouse (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) played the entire game and record 10 saves in 27 shots faced.
Hiram will travel to Greencastle, Ind. for a matchup against DePauw University in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
