GREENVILLE, PA. — The Hiram College women’s basketball team ended its three-game losing streak with a 66-42 win against Thiel College today (Sunday, Dec. 19) in a non-conference game in Greenville, Pa. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 5-3 overall and the Tomcats fall to 1-8 overall for the season.
Thiel scored the game’s first points in the first half, but Hiram quickly took the lead with an ensuing 9-2 scoring run capped by a three-pointer by senior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) giving the Terriers a 9-4 advantage. The Tomcats came back to tie the game, but Hiram would lead throughout the majority of the half, including taking a 26-21 margin into the locker rooms.
The Hiram scoring picked up in the second half as the Terriers took control of the game with a 22-4 run near the midway point of the period that ended in a layup by sophomore guard Chelsea Kovach (Lakewood) making the score 55-32 with 8:08 left to play. The Terriers recorded their largest lead of the game of 26 points, 66-40, with 1:41 left to play thanks to one of two free-throws by sophomore forward Amanda Petrusky (Parma/Valley Forge) en route to the 66-42 final.
Thiel had one player score in double-figures in Nina Gabrelcik with 11 points on three-of-four shooting (75.0 percent).
Hiram was led by junior guard Tiffany Shields (Bedford Heights/Bedford) who posted a double-double with game-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cowan was second in scoring with 13 points and Kovach rounded out the high scorers with 10 points.
Hiram will host Bluffton University tomorrow (Monday, Dec. 20) in a non-conference matchup at Price Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
