DETROIT, MICH.  —  Junior guard Tiffany Shields (Bedford Heights/Bedford) scored a game and career-high 22 points to lead the Hiram College women’s basketball team past non-conference opponent Marygrove College, 72-54, today (Saturday, Dec. 5) in Detroit, Mich.  [Game Stats]

With the win, the Terriers improve to 4-0 overall and the Mustangs fall to 2-9 overall for the season.  Hiram equals its best start in program history beginning the season with four straight victories.

The game remained close in the early minutes of the first half, but a 12-2 scoring run by Marygrove, gave the Mustangs their largest lead of seven points, 14-7, at the 14:40 minute mark.  Hiram stayed within striking distance and eventually took the lead with a 12-2 run of its own later in the period that ended with a jumper by junior guard Kelsey Durichko (Brunswick) giving the Terriers a 24-18 advantage with 7:04 left in the half.  Hiram never trailed in the game again and led by a score of 38-27 at the break.

The Terriers continued to pull away in the second half and recorded their largest lead of the game of 25 points, 58-33, on a basket by freshman guard Marisa Thomas (Lorain/Amherst) with 12:41 left to play.  Marygrove made a small run late in the half and narrowed the gap to 14 points, 65-51, with 4:25 remaining.  But that would be as close as the Mustangs would get as Hiram cruised to the 72-54 victory.

Hiram shot an impressive 44.1 percent (26-0f-59) from the field and Marygrove shot 36.7 percent (22-of-60).

The Mustangs had one player score in double-figures in Andrea Smith who scored 14 points on seven-of-10 shooting (70.0 percent) in addition to grabbing eight rebounds.  Teammate Tiffany Coleman contributed with a game-tying high nine boards.

Hiram was led by Shields’ 22 points on five-of-11 shooting (45.5 percent), including a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.  Durichko and senior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) rounded out the high scorers with 12 points each.  Both also grabbed a game-tying high nine rebounds.  Durichko was a rebound and an assist away from recording a triple-double as she also tallied a game-high nine assists.

Hiram will host Grove City (Pa.) College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at Price Gymnasium.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
