HIRAM, OHIO – The Hiram College volleyball team defeated The College of Wooster, 3-0, today (Saturday, Oct. 30) in the North Coast Athletic Conference and regular-season home finale at Price Gymnasium on Senior Day. [Match Statistics]. The win gives them a share of the NCAC regular season championship with Wittenberg University.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 23-9 overall and 13-1 in the NCAC. The loss for the Fighting Scots dropped their record to 17-13 overall and 8-5 NCAC. The win for Hiram extends the winning streak to nine straight matches for the Terriers.
Each set was touch and go. Hiram defeated the Fighting Scots 25-23 in the first set, securing the win on sophomore outside hitter Ariel Pund’s (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) service ace. The second set was decided by a final of 25-22 and the third set and the match sweep was capped by a 25-18 victory.
JuniorAll-NCAC outside hitter Shaina Bryan (South Euclid/Brush) led all Terriers with nine kills. Junior All-NCAC middle hitter Kristi Opfer (Garrettsville/Garfield) was second on the team with eight kills. Senior setter Alyssa Coundourides (Brunswick/Parma-Padua Franciscan) set the table with a team-leading 21 assists and freshman Kallie Rogers (Petersburg/Springfield Local) wasn’t far behind with 15 assists.
Defensively, senior All-NCAC outside hitter Kim Sage (Bellevue) led the way with 12 digs, while Pund finished with eight digs.
Hiram will face the same Wooster team in the first round of the NCAC Conference Tournament next Friday, Nov. 5. Wittenberg University will be the top seed and will host the Tournament. The Terriers will play against the Scots at 7 p.m. in Springfield.
