TOWSON, MD. — The Hiram College volleyball team wraped-up its season-opening volleyball weekend with a two-match split on the final day of the “Gio” Giovanazzi Tournament hosted by Goucher (Md.) College in Towson, Md. The Terriers lost their first match against Johns (Md.) Hopkins University, 3-0, but defeated Catholic (Wash. D.C.) University, 3-0, in the third-place match.
Following today’s action, the Terriers are 3-1 overall for the season.
In the match against Johns Hopkins, the Blue Jays jumped out early winning the first set by the final of 25-15. Johns Hopkins took control of the match by capturing the second set, 25-12 and took the three-set sweep by winning the next set 25-22. The loss, would put Hiram in the third-place match and would take on Catholic.
Against the Cardinals, Hiram came away with a narrow victory in the first set, 25-23, to take a 1-0 match lead. The Terriers won convincingly in the second set, 25-15, and would also come out on top in the third, 25-22, to claim third place overall in the tournament.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, freshman Katie Barton (Newbury) was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Hiram will travel to University Heights on Wednesday, Sept. 5 for a non-conference match against John Carroll University. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
