The Hiram College volleyball team trailed by two sets and rallied to even the match, but would fall to DePauw (Ind.) University in the fifth and deciding set, losing to the Tigers, 3-2, in a North Coast Athletic Conference match at Price Gymnasium in the home finale.
DePauw (21-4, 6-2 NCAC) defeated Hiram (17-9, 5-2 NCAC) by the scores of 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 22-25 and 15-8.
The Terrier offense was led by sophomore Lindsay Brewer (Barberton/Manchester) with 20 kills. Two other Hiram players recorded double-digits in kills with freshman Marissa Jay(Parma/Padua Franciscan) tallying 11 kills and freshman Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) added 10 kills. All-NCAC junior Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) racked up 45 set assists and Scruggs had a team-high three set assists.
On defense, senior Danielle Day (Newbury) had 32 digs, followed by freshman Laura Kelly(Massillon/Jackson) with 14 digs. In addition, junior Regina Zyle (Cleveland/Beaumont) added 12 digs. At the net, Scruggs led the team in blocking with a solo block and three assists.
Hiram will travel to Oberlin for a matchup against Oberlin College on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in the NCAC finale. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
