DELAWARE, OHIO — The Hiram College volleyball team continued its winning ways with a pair of victories today (Saturday, Oct. 23) at a tri-match hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware. The Terriers defeated the Battling Bishops, 3-0, in a North Coast Athletic Conference match and then also defeated non-conference opponent Otterbein College, 3-2.
Following today’s action, the Terriers improve to 21-9 overall and 11-1 in the NCAC. Hiram has now won seven straight matches and recorded its second straight 20-plus win season. The Terriers have also posted 20 or more wins in seven of the past eight years.
In the match against OWU, Hiram took an early match lead with a 25-16 win in the first set. The Terriers then dominated the second set, 25-9, and took a commanding 2-0 match lead. Hiram clinched the straight-set victory by capturing the third set, 25-20, for the 3-0 overall sweep.
The match against Otterbein would be a back-and-forth affair as the Cardinals took the first set, 25-23, for an early 1-0 match lead. Hiram then evened the match at a set apiece with a 25-18 victory in the second set. Otterbein regained the lead with a win the third set, 25-14, but the Terriers battled back again by winning the fourth set, 25-19, and extended the match to a fifth an final set. It would be Hiram who would prevail in a close fifth set with the final score of 15-13 and claimed the 3-2 match victory.
Hiram will wrap-up the 2010 regular season next week with a pair of home matches beginning with a NCAC match against Oberlin College on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Price Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
